AIR IN LUNGS

Gravity pulls me down
crawling on the ground
Like a soldier who's just lost
the battle or the cost
Rows of politicians smile
see their troops in sweet denial
Leaving now to fight the war
nobody knows the reasons for

Imagery pulls me to their cause
follow the star and stripe their laws
Like the enemy who are proud to die
suicide their religious cry
The stench of death again
hatred and vile among men
Home on leave through the emerald isle
Stopping off at Shannon for the country mile

Irish air in the lungs will lift their hearts
keep them from those foreign parts
Fighting for the western freedoms
No colours in their dreams of demons
The reality of death and war
these young men know it more
For democracy they fly tonight
to the land of promise far out of sight
